Dutch architect and writer. As Editor of the journal Wendingen (Turnings—published 1918–31) he encouraged innovatory typography and design, and was a central figure in promoting the Amsterdam School. He formed links between German and Dutch exponents of Expressionism, and publicized work by Eileen Gray and Frank Lloyd Wright. As an architect he was influenced by Mendelsohn, Wright, and Futurism. He designed several housing projects for Amsterdam South in the 1920s, and a large development on the Hoofdweg (1925–6) with tortuously curving complex façades. He published My First Century shortly before he died.
