American novelist and dramatist. His novels include The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1927) and The Ides of March (1948). He scored considerable success in the theatre with Our Town (1938), The Skin of Our Teeth (1942), and The Merchant of Yonkers (1938), a comedy which was revised as The Matchmaker (1954) and adapted as the musical comedy Hello, Dolly! (1963).
