German-Americanastronomer. In the 1930s he showed that prominent absorption bands in the spectra of the giant planets indicate the presence of methane and ammonia in their atmospheres. He also proposed models for the giant planets in which an iron–silicate core is surrounded by a deep ice mantle and a deep atmosphere. Wildt also worked on solar and astrophysical problems.
