US musicologist and writer. His closely researched study Tchaikovky's Ballets (New York, 1985) has shed important light on the history and construction of The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake, as well as on the state of ballet in Petipa's time. It has influenced several stagings of the classics including P. Schaufuss's Nutcracker (London Festival Ballet, 1986) and A. Dowell's Swan Lake (Royal Ballet, 1986). His subsequent publications include A Century of Russian Ballet (1990) and The Life and Ballets of Lev Ivanov (1997).
