Prof. of mus. and univ. org., Duke Univ., Durham, N. Car., from 1985. Author of New History of the Organ (1980), The Organ Music of J. S. Bach, 3 vols. (1980–4), and The Organ in Western Culture, 750–1250 (1993), besides many papers on org. mus. and technique.
