Georgia-born novelist whose works include End as a Man (1947), a satirical view of a Southern military academy like the one the author attended; Geraldine Bradshaw (1950) and Reach to the Stars (1951), both views of life as seen by hotel bellboys; Natural Child (1952); To Eat a Peach (1955); Eternal Fire (1963); Providence Island (1969); Rambling Rose (1972); and The Big Nickel (1975). He adapted his first novel as a play (1953), and he has written several successful film scenarios. The Gates of Hell (1951) collects stories.
