Shakespearian scholar and editor. He was responsible for editing most of the plays in the New Cambridge Shakespeare series. Among other scholarly works are his influential ‘biographical adventure’ The Essential Shakespeare (1932), What Happens in Hamlet (1935), and The Fortunes of Falstaff (1943).
