A weather balloon that carries only a radar reflector and is tracked to determine wind speed and direction. There are about 500 upper air weather stations in the world as a whole. Each station releases two wind sondes each day, at 0600 and 1800 UTC (coordinated Universal Time), midway between the launches of radiosondes. See also rawinsonde.
