May be on the basis either of the region in which the grapes are grown or quality, using grapes from a wide geographical area (e.g. in Australia and China). The first ‘temporary’ wine classification was introduced in France for the 1855 Paris exhibition of the Bordeaux vineyards. The German (and Austrian) system is based on both the geographical origin of the grapes and also their ripeness or natural sugar content.
