A prolific Austrian Indologist and Sanskritist. Educated at the University of Vienna, he was in Oxford from 1888–98, working as Max Müller's assistant and as librarian of the Indian Institute. He moved to Prague in 1899, where he was appointed to the Chair in Sanskrit in 1902. Among his many publications are an edition of the Āpastamba Gṛhyasūtra (1887), and his three volume Geschichte der Indischen Literatur (‘History of Indian Literature’) (1904–20).
