wisdom tooth

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A lay term for a third molar tooth. They are generally thought to be called wisdom teeth because they appear so late after the other teeth erupt, at an age where one is supposedly wiser than as a child. Their eruption period is normally between the ages of 17 and 25, although they may erupt considerably later or not at all. See molar, permanent maxillary third.
