Ballet in one act with libretto and choreography by J. Carter, music by Salzedo, and design by N. McDowell. Premiered 24 May 1956 by Ballet der Lage Landen, Amsterdam, with McDowell, A. Bayley, and Carter. It is based on the ‘Ballad of Barbara Allan’ and tells the story of a love affair between a girl and a witch boy who is murdered by villagers suspicious of his strangeness. The boy is reborn, however, suggesting that the situation will endlessly repeat itself through time. It was revived for several companies, including London Festival Ballet and Buenos Aires.
