Quick Reference
Wolfreston amassed a substantial collection of 16th- and 17th-century dramatic and poetical works, some of which she annotated. Among her books was the unique first quarto of Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis (1593), later owned by Malone and now in the Bodleian. Her collection largely remained at her former home at Statfold Hall, Staffordshire, until May 1856 when it was sold at Sotheby’s: it amounted then to c.960 books; about 100 volumes owned by her, and often inscribed ‘frances wolfreston hor [her] bouk’, have been located.
