Quick Reference

Literally, ‘no death’. The sky father and supreme being of the Maidu Indians of California. He is also known as Kodo-yapeu, ‘world creator’; Kodo-yanpe, ‘world namer’; and Kodo-yeponi,‘ world chief’. Having made human beings and set the natural processes in motion, Wonomi ruled supreme until his adversary Coyote appeared. This trickster god, however, was able to displace the sky father because of one reason: men followed Coyote and not Wonomi. The souls of the dead can still attain to the sky father's ‘flowerland’ above the clouds, as his continued solicitude indicates, but beneath the floor of the sky it is the trickster god who holds sway.
