Quick Reference

(c. 1644–95).

Oxford master-mason. He designed the old Ashmolean Museum, Broad Street, now the Museum of the History of Science (1679–83), the first public museum in England, one of the most advanced Classical buildings for its date in Oxford. He rebuilt the tower of Deddington Parish Church, Oxon. (1683–5), in a convincing Gothic style, so he deserves mention as a versatile and competent designer.
