a nickel-oxide filter that holds back all but a few rays projected from an ultraviolet light source. These rays (W. light) cause fluorescence in hair and skin affected by some fungal and bacterial infections and are therefore useful in diagnosis. [R. W. Wood (1868–1955), US physician]
