New Zealand painter, who with Rita Angus and Colin McMahon pioneered a move away from conventional figuration in his country's art. His work combines influences from Cezanne and Expressionism and is devoted mainly to landscapes and portraits of family and friends. In 1979 he became the first New Zealand painter to be knighted. His autobiography, Sage Tea, was published in 1981.
