US astronaut. He was the command module pilot for Apollo 15, launched to the Moon in July 1971. He orbited the Moon for three days while David Scott and Jim Irwin explored the lunar surface. Worden mapped the Moon from his orbit and later took the first deep-space extravehicular activity. He was selected as an astronaut in 1966 and left NASA in 1975.
