In social insects, the caste that rears the brood, maintains the structure of the nest, and forages for food. Usually workers are sterile: female in ants, bees, and wasps, and either male or female in termites. In termites, a true worker caste (incapable of metamorphosis) occurs only in Termitidae. In the lower families colony labour is performed by nymphs and pseudergates.
