A routine or sometimes ad hoc procedure in which industrial safety officials and/or sanitarians (health inspectors) carry out inspections to ensure that working conditions are safe and do not expose workers to needless risk of harm. The nature and frequency of the inspection vary. For instance, inspections of underground mines are usually conducted more frequently and with greater rigor than are inspections of a textile or tailoring factory.
