Reformist group headed by Warith Deen Muhammad that split from the racial supremicism and nationalism of the Black Muslims in 1976 in favor of a closer connection to mainstream Sunni Islam. Aimed to increase international awareness of Islam and its practice on a global scale. Changed its name to the American Muslim Mission in 1978 and to the Muslim American Society in 1992.
