Convened by UNICEF, this Summit conference was held at UN headquarters in New York in 1990 and attended by 71 heads of state and many national ministers of relevant government departments. The Summit approved a declaration on the survival, protection, and development of children, the “Declaration on the Rights of the Child,” which has been ratified by all nations except the failed state of Somalia and the United States.
