Overview

wormhole

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A solution of Einstein's equation for the general theory of relativity that connects two distant regions in one asymptotically flat universe. These solutions have also been considered in quantum gravity. There is no experimental evidence for workholes at present but their existence has been postulated in quantum gravity to explain why the cosmological constant is very close to zero and in speculations concerning time travel. Some of these applications of wormholes make use of the tunnel effect, with calculations being performed using instanton techniques. Wormholes are predicted to have a very short lifetime.
