Quick Reference

(best‐known pseudonym of John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris) (1903–69), a successful writer principally of science fiction. Works in this genre included The Day of the Triffids (1951), The Kraken Wakes (1953), The Chrysalids (1955), and The Midwich Cuckoos (1957). Most of his works are distinguished by the contrast between a comfortable English background and the sudden invasion of catastrophe, usually of a fantastic or metaphysical nature.

The word ‘triffid’ has passed into the language to describe almost any kind of imaginary hostile and dangerous plant: Wyndham's species, lethal and mobile monsters, were so called because of their three‐pronged roots, on which they propelled themselves.

Subjects: Literature.
