A proposed European Space Agency observatory for X-ray astronomy, known in full as the X-ray Evolving Universe Spectrometer mission. It is the potential follow-on to XMM-Newton and is being jointly studied by ESA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). As currently envisioned, XEUS will consist of two spacecraft, one containing the mirror and the other containing the detectors, flying in formation at the L2 Lagrangian point of the Earth's orbit. XEUS would be launched around 2015, with a second mission utilizing a larger mirror some 10 years later.
