Quick Reference

Xu, who looks like a San and speaks !Kung, is the creator of all things, including mankind, and he sends the rain.

He lives in the sky in a two-storied house, the lower story occupied by himself, his wife, and many children, while the upper is occupied by the souls of the dead. Honey, locusts, fat flies, and butterflies are found here in abundance, and the Great Captain dines on these. The souls of the dead eat nothing. Xu summons the musicians to play their music, and he gives them supernatural powers. He is the lord over rain and lightning, as well as over the spirits, ∥gaunab, and through their chief he sends good fortune in hunting or in the collection of foods. He is prayed to for rain, in sickness, before and after hunting, and before travel, and is often given the first offerings of the chase. He has neither wife nor children. He is benevolent and good.
