A systematic Dharmaśāstra text, attributed to the legendary ṛṣi Yājñavalkya, but dating from the 3rd to 4th centuries ce. It is probably the best known work of this type after Manusmṛti. It has engendered many commentaries, the most celebrated being the 11th-century ce Mitākṣarā (‘Comprehensive and Concise’) of Vijñāneśvara.
