Yakitori is a sort of Japanese chicken kebab. Chunks of chicken are threaded on to skewers and grilled while being basted with a sauce made from soy sauce, rice wine, and sugar. They are a popular Japanese snack, being served from yakitori stands and in yakitori bars. The word is a compound formed from yaki, ‘grill, cook’ and tori, ‘bird’. Compare sukiyaki and teriyaki.
