Earliest printed version of tune, under this title, in Vol. I of Aird's Selection of Scotch, English, Irish, and Foreign Airs for the Fife, Violin, or German Flute (Glasgow, c.1775). Many sets of humorous or nonsense words fitted to it since. Anton Rubinstein wrote pf. variations on tune, and Vieuxtemps's Caprice burlesque, vn. and pf., is based on it. It is used, altered, in theme in finale of Dvořák's New World Sym.
