Quick Reference

Travel narrative by Thoreau, partly published in Putnam's Monthly Magazine (1853), and issued posthumously in a volume with his “Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers” (1866). Derived from his journal notes during a week's trip (Sept. 25–Oct. 3, 1850) from his home in Concord to Montreal and Quebec, the narrative presents homely impressions of the farmers and townspeople, and the intimate details of travel and scenery, with digressions of literary criticism and comments on fortresses, Roman Catholicism, the railroad, and comparative manners in Canada and New England.
