Pāli name for the region, and the inhabitants of the region, extending from north-west India into Afghanistan. The word itself is probably a corruption of ‘Ionian’, a term used to refer to the Greeks resident in the province of Bactria. Buddhism spread to the region some time after the Council of Pāṭaliputra II (c.250 bce).
