an illustrated quarterly, devoted to literature and art. Published by J. Lane and edited by H. Harland, with the initial assistance of Beardsley as art editor, its first issue (which included Beerbohm's essay ‘A Defence of Cosmetics’) provoked a public storm which did not subside during the three years of the Book's life. Writers and artists published included H. James, Gosse, Le Gallienne, Arnold Bennett, Dowson, Beardsley, Walter Sickert, and Wilson Steer.
