Spanish dancer and choreographer. She grew up in Granada, and from the age of 11 began to study dance locally. Her training expanded to include drama studies in Seville (1983) and choreography in Havana (1984) before she made her debut in the company of Rafael Aguilar (1985). For the next 12 years she collaborated and performed with a variety of flamenco artists, including Javier Latorre, Manolete and Merche Esmeralda and in 1997 created her own full-length work The Claw and the Angel. The production not only showcased her exceptionally expressive and articulate dancing but also her interest in forging a new dance theatre language for flamenco. The following year she formed her own company, with her husband Paco Jarana as music director, and her subsequent productions have included 5 Women 5 (2000), Four Voices (2004), The Spindle of Memory (2006), Signs and Wonders (2007), and Rain (2009). Her company tours internationally. In 1997 she was featured in the Mike Figgis documentary Flamenco Women and also appeared in his 2002 film Hotel. She is recipient of numerous awards.
