born in Russia, came to New York City (1901), whose sweatshops and ghetto life she described in tales, Hungry Hearts (1920), and novels, Salome of the Tenements (1922), Children of Loneliness (1923), Arrogant Beggar (1927), and All I Could Never Be (1932). Red Ribbon on a White Horse (1950) is her autobiography. A selection of her work, some previously unpublished, appeared as The Open Cage (1979).
