Japanese-British dancer. She trained in Tokyo and joined Britain's Royal Ballet School in 1983 after winning the Prix de Lausanne. In 1984 she joined Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet (later Birmingham Royal Ballet) where she was promoted to principal in 1988. In 1995 she joined the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden where her outstanding classical technique and musicality were primarily showcased in the 19th-century repertory. She also danced in works by Ashton, Bintley, and MacMillan and created roles in Wheeldon's A Royal Ballet (1998) and Corder's Masquerade (1999). In 2006 she joined Kumakawa's K Ballet in Japan while continuing to dance with the Royal. She gave her last performance at Covent Garden in 2010.
