An Italian patriotic society. Formed in 1831 by Giuseppe Mazzini and 40 other Italian exiles in Marseilles, it set out to replace earlier secret societies, such as the Carbonari as a prime force in the Risorgimento. Its significance lay in the kindling of national consciousness and thus contributed towards Italian unification.
