Founded independently of the YMCA (1855, but united 1877) by Emma Robarts with her Prayer Union of 23 young women ‘to offer service with their prayers’, and Emily Kinnaird whose London hostel, originally for Florence Nightingale's nurses en route for the Crimea, became a hostel for girls in need of safe, cheap accommodation. Lord Shaftesbury became its first president (1878).
