An eating pattern that results in wild swings in body weight (figure 71). Rapid weight loss is followed by equally rapid weight gain. The final body weight is often higher than the original body weight. Yo-Yo diets include many short-term, very low calorie diets which encourage rapid fasting. Weight is lost, but when the period of dieting ends, the dieter often binges in an effort to satisfy the body's craving for food. Yo-Yo diets are now known to be associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
