The post or posts to which the victim of the Vedic paśubandha (animal) sacrifice was fastened. The cutting and shaping of the yūpa from various trees was itself configured by an elaborate ritual, prescribed in such texts as the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa. Usually octagonal in shape, the yūpa was assimilated to Indra's vajra, and by extension to the axis mundi.
