Arabic term for every sort of socially abhorred heresy. Historically applied to anyone suspected of undermining orthodoxy by cloaking an esoteric faith beneath a profession of Islam. Hence a zindiq is a heretic who subscribes to sectarianism and threatens the unity of the community by dissension. In modern Arabic the term is used for atheists and secularists, whereas ilhad and mulhid are used for heresy and heretics.
