Eng.‐born conductor and cellist. Began to comp. at age of 9. Lessons from Britten and Imogen Holst. At 10 took up cello and at 12 was youngest member of Nat. Youth Orch. of Great Britain. Pupil of Herbert Withers, then of Cassadó in Florence 1954–9. Completed cello studies at Cologne Cons. In 1965 went to USA for graduate work at Brandeis and Harvard Univs. On faculty of New England Cons. from 1967. Cond. Boston PO from 1979, specializing in Mahler and Romantics. Regular guest cond. of Philharmonia Orch., with whom he has recorded Mahler syms.
