Beneficial effects associated with tapering, named after Emil Zatopek. His intense training prior to the 50 European Games was interrupted by illness that hospitalized him for 2 weeks. He came out of hospital just 2 days before competing in the 10 000 m, which he won convincingly. He went on to win the 5000 m. His success has been attributed to the benefits of his enforced tapering.
