Ger. composer, conductor, and teacher. Dir., Berlin Singakademie from 1800. Founded Liedertafel, Berlin, 1809, and Royal Inst. for Church Mus. 1820. Friend and teacher of Mendelssohn, allied with him in Bach revival. Wrote oratorio, operas, cantatas, and Lieder.
