An absence of gravity or its apparent force. This phenomenon produces the state of free fall or weightlessness. Earth-orbiting spacecraft such as the space shuttle remain within the influence of gravity, demonstrated by their adherence to an orbital route. The term ‘zero gravity’ is sometimes also used for weightlessness in such an orbit, but ‘microgravity’ is the more correct term.
