Soviet dancer and ballet director. He studied at the Bolshoi Ballet School, graduating in 1944 into the Bolshoi Ballet. He was promoted to principal in 1951 and was Ulanova's regular partner, starring with her in the Bolshoi Ballet film of Lavrovsky's Romeo and Juliet (1954). He also partnered Struchkova and Plisetskaya. He danced with the Bolshoi for 25 years and was then director of the State Ensemble of Classical Ballet in Moscow (1972–6), for which he choreographed Francesca da Rimini (mus. Tchaikovsky), among other works. He toured widely with his company to Europe. He was also a noted painter.
