Prime Minister of Bangladesh, 1991–6, 2001–6 The third of five children, in 1960 she married Ziaur Rahman, an army officer who became Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 1975. Following his assassination in 1981, Khaleda Zia entered politics, and in 1984 she became Chair of the Bangladesh National Party, which her husband had founded. She became the first female Prime Minister, and the first to see out a full term of office. Zia pursued liberal economic policies, and improved general education and health‐care provision. Her coalition with Muslim religious parties made it difficult for her to combat the growth of religious fundamentalism, especially in her second full term of office.
