Ger. composer. Studied at Bonn, Königsdorf, and Berlin Univs. while earning living as labourer and dance‐band player. Studied comp. with Jarnach, and with Fortner and Leibowitz at Darmstadt. Taught history of mus. theory, Cologne Univ., 1950–2, comp. at Cologne Hochschule from 1958. Works covered whole field of mid‐20th cent. comp. techniques from serialism to elecs. Opera Die Soldaten a ‘pluralistic’ work, because it uses mixed‐media resources and combines conventional orch. with elecs. Made much use of quotations, referring to this method as ‘collage’.
