(Janáček: Osud). Ten. A composer. He had an affair with Míla Valková but, because he was not rich, her mother disapproved and they parted. He did not know that Míla was pregnant. They now meet in a spa town and realize that their feelings for each other are as strong as ever. They marry and set up home with their son and Míla's mentally unstable mother. Živny is attacked by her and when Míla tries to intervene the two women are killed. Živny pours his grief into the writing of an opera about these events and years later students rehearse it. During these preparations he hears the dead Míla's voice and collapses, himself dead. Much of this character is thought to be based on Janáček himself.
