Quick Reference

A protein (tight junction protein 1, TJP1, 1748 aa) of the MAGUK family located on the cytoplasmic membrane surface of the zonula occludens (tight junction) and interacting with claudins. Two isoforms are known. Cingulin, which is distinct, is found in the same region. Other tight junction proteins are known, TJP2 (ZO-2, 1116 aa) is mutated in familial hypercholanaemia. TJP3 (ZO-3, 898 aa) colocalizes with ZO-1. Tight junction associated protein (TJAP1, ZO-4, TJP4, 547 aa) also colocalizes with ZO-1.
