Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The band around the sky in which very few galaxies are seen. It is a result of obscuration by interstellar dust in the plane of the Milky Way, although the zone is actually inclined at 2 ° to the galactic equator. The detailed structure of the zone is irregular, varying in width between 38 ° (towards the galactic centre) and 12 °, with some fairly transparent regions known as galactic windows.
